The purpose of this image is to celebrate the end of the war. The audience would be the Americans who had been longing for their loved ones to come home from the world. the story this image tells is one of victory and suppressed excitement and love. The main rhetorical appeal is pathos because the image makes the viewer want to smile. The image expresses the relief and joy that everyone in the states were feeling after the end of the war. Logos is also present due to the presentation in Life magazine. The mode is visual while the media is print because it was seen by viewers in a magazine. The design of the picture creates the feeling of widespread victory. The streets are flooded with soldiers coming home from war but the main focus of the image is of the two kissing. They are placed directly in the middle of the picture and there body language captures the relief and disregard to everything but the euphoric moment that they are living. The simplicity of the image directly expresses the feeling that most people were having as a result to the news. This piece could be adapted into a movie which would show the suffering and miserable way of life people were living during the war with an ending that included the meeting of the two individuals centered in the picture. A movie could express moving emotion and more background for those who do not know the context of the image.
